Who Should Take This Course?
A certified handler is someone qualified to handle very toxic substances under the Health and Safety at Work (HSW) Act. This certification is necessary for those who:
- Purchase or use tracked agrichemicals with hazard classifications of Acute toxicity category 1 or 2 (HSNO classes 6.1A or 6.1B).
- Provide guidance and assistance to others handling these substances.
Certified handlers must:
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the product, including its risks and controls.
- Provide training and guidance to others using these agrichemicals.
- Be available on the property to assist during the handling of the substance.
Process to Achieve Certified Handler Certification
- Choose a Compliance Certifier: Select a compliance certifier.
- Contact the Certifier: Discuss requirements, complete the application, and pay fees.
- Provide Evidence: Show usage of Acute toxicity category 1 or 2 products (6.1A, 6.1B) or prove the need for certification.
- Knowledge Assessment: Complete a test set by the compliance certifier.
- Upload Evidence of Good Practice: Include tracking records, photos of storage, and PPE.
- Review by Certifier: The certifier will review your application and may request additional information or a site visit.

To prepare for certification:
- Inventory of Hazardous Substances: Keep an updated list.
- Tracking Sheets: Maintain records of substance usage.
- Safety Data Sheets (SDS): Ensure they are current (no more than 5 years old).
- Emergency Response Plan: Have a tested plan in place.
